Creating a Content Marketing Strategy

Your content marketing strategy is your “why.” It is why you are creating content, who you are helping, and how you will help them in a way no one else can.

Organizations typically use content marketing to build an audience and to achieve at least one of these profitable results: increase revenue, lower costs, or get better customers. A marketing strategy will help you keep your business organized and your audience interested.

There are no definite rules or templates that you must follow, but what should your content marketing strategy include? 

Having a documented marketing strategy can increase your odds of success by 313%, so here are things that you should include:

1) Your business plan for content marketing. This covers the goals you have for your content program, the values you want your business to uphold, and possible challenges that your business might face along the way.
2) A description of your audience. This is where you explain who your audience is, what their needs are, what they want to see, what they engage with, etc.
3) Your brand story. Explain the story of your brand and your mission. Characterize your content marketing in terms of what ideas and messages you want to communicate, how your company differs from the competition, and how you see your business improving.
4) The Channel plan. This should include the platforms that will be used, and how they will create cohesive content for your brand.

There are several templates online that can will help your craft your own content marketing strategy. Although there isn’t a single set of rules that is right or that works for everyone, it might be beneficial to follow a template if starting from scratch. Some parts of your strategy, like mission and business goals,  will likely not change. However, it is good to review and update other aspects of your content strategy periodically.
